The comedy centers on two very different families, the Buckwalds and the Gonzalezes living in a fictional Southwest desert town on the U.S. - Mexico border. Bud Buckwald, a married father of three and a Border Patrol agent, is just a tad behind the times and feels slightly threatened by the cultural changes transforming his neighborhood. He lives next door to Ernest Gonzalez, an ambitious family man, who has been in the country less than 10 years, but is already doing better than Bud – which, it turns out, is a bit of an issue for Bud.

Ernesto is seduced by the glitziness of the church, and the reverend scrambles to bring over all the other Mexican residents by "Hispandering." Bud disapproves and teams up with Ernesto to restore the status quo, but their plan backfires.

Of course, this kid also happens to be the No. 1 drug mule in Mexico!

Incensed, Bud decides they need to have a baby in order to counteract the demographic shift.

Meanwhile, Bud is stalked by an ostrich that he becomes convinced is his spirit animal.

In search of a new energy drink, Sanford travels to Mexico and gets hooked on a new, even more powerful elixir; Bud helps a Mexican "Bud" look-alike sneak over the border, so he can take a break from his own life; and Ernesto is tormented by a stubborn demon leaf which even his super-powerful leaf blower cannot remove.

Meanwhile, Ernesto and Maria are forced to put Pepito on medication for his ADHD, but they don't like the side effects.

However, Bud refuses to leave his house, which catches fire, and Ernesto must come to the rescue. Meanwhile J.C. and Becky decide to take a break from their relationship and explore the dating world before committing to each other.

Much to everyone's surprise, the audience loves him and he becomes a big star in the Mexican community.

Meanwhile, Gert seeks revenge against the American Gal Company.

It’s not only his job on the line, but his manhood as well, since it’s Bud who’s inadvertently let El Coyote cross into the U.S. hundreds of times. The drug lord, Barracuda, is also determined to remove El Coyote from the spotlight and reclaim the top spot on the list for himself. Meanwhile, Ruiz is on his own journey to become a man and appear "more Mexican" to a pretty waitress.
